zAmya Theater Project seeks a Managing Director who is passionate about the role of arts in social change, and who is committed to housing justice, racial equity, and the dignity of people with lived experience of homelessness. We collaborate with unhoused and housed individuals to craft original theater performances that not only spark real community change, but also create healing and build relationships among everyone involved. In this full-time role, you will work in close partnership with our Executive Artistic Director to champion our artistic vision, strengthen our financial sustainability, and expand our community impact.

  • $500/month health stipend

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Supervises: Operations Associate, Contract marketing coordinator, front-of-house, and finance staff

Compensation: $54.000-$58,000 salary (depending on experience)

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Managing Director is responsible for the operational, financial, and organizational leadership of zAmya Theater Project. Working in close partnership with and reporting to the Executive Artistic Director (EAD), the Managing Director oversees communication of the company’s artistic vision, strengthens financial sustainability, and expands organizational impact.

As a member of the leadership team, the Managing Director co-develops organizational strategy with the EAD and Board of Directors, oversees day-to-day business operations, and ensures that resources, relationships, and systems align with zAmya’s artistic and community goals.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising & Development | 50%

  • Co-design the annual fundraising strategy with the EAD and Board of Directors, and develop the annual fundraising budget and calendar.

  • Translate zAmya’s artistic vision and impact into compelling institutional, individual, and corporate fundraising materials, including grants, appeals, sponsorship decks, and final reports.

  • Identify, cultivate, and steward individual donors, foundations, sponsors, partners, and other funding opportunities.

  • Manage donor communications, stewardship activities, fundraising events, the Fundraising Committee, grant compliance, and quarterly goal tracking.

  • Create the annual report, conduct prospect research, oversee AirTable database records, and share responsibility for high-level donor portfolios with the EAD.

Partnerships & Stakeholders | 10%

  • Collaborate with the EAD to cultivate institutional, academic, social service, and community partnerships that increase statewide visibility.

  • Co-develop an earned-income strategy for fee-based performances and workshops through conferences and other relevant opportunities.

Communications & Marketing | 20%

  • Co-develop and oversee the annual communications strategy and calendar aligned with production and fundraising timelines.

  • Oversee day-to-day communications across social media, email, newsletters, website updates, audience development, participant outreach, and production-related communications.

  • Collect and compile impact data for audiences, donors, funders, and community partners.

  • Coordinate external designers, photographers, publicists, and communications partners, and ensure materials are accurate, timely, on brand, and archived.

Bookkeeping & Financial Management | 10%

  • Co-create the annual operating budget with the EAD for Board approval and collaborate on project and production budgets.

  • Report budget progress quarterly to the EAD and Board, maintain controls and documentation, and oversee QuickBooks and the external accounting relationship for A/P, A/R, and monthly reconciliation.

  • Protect sensitive financial information, collect direct-deposit information and W-9s, support cash flow monitoring and annual tax filings, and track participant payments.

  • Maintain access controls and ensure compliance with zAmya finance rules and policies.

General Administration & HR | 10%

  • Participate in planning and leadership meetings, support Board communications and reporting, and attend Board meetings.

  • Contract, oversee, onboard, and train administrative staff.

  • Establish and manage venue and partner contracts, support new Board member onboarding, and maintain calendars, deadlines, contracts, and core documentation.

  • Maintain required insurance policies and manage monthly health insurance stipends.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Demonstrated nonprofit leadership experience across fundraising, communications, finance, partnerships, or administration.

  • Strong written communication and relationship-management skills across donors, funders, partners, staff, and Board members.

  • Ability to translate mission and artistic priorities into practical systems, budgets, calendars, and measurable plans.

  • Commitment to housing justice, racial equity, and the dignity of people with lived experience of homelessness.

Preferred

  • Experience in nonprofit arts, community-based theater, or social justice organizations.

  • Experience with AirTable, QuickBooks, grant management, and external accounting partners.
