"You know how they say a monkey wrench, the unexpected comes out of nowhere? Well this came out of nowhere."

~ Thelma, Somewhere Else Mother: True Stories of the Unexpected Homeless

Somewhere Else Mothera play created by zAmya’s Assistant Executive Director, Nicole Gurgel – will be making its fourth run this December. A documentary drama, Somewhere Else Mother is completely based on interviews Nicole held with four women living homeless in St. Paul. Their stories are performed on stage by a cast of student actors, word-for-word true to their original telling.

A play about homelessness? Using true stories of those who have been homeless? Sounds pretty zAmya-esque, doesn’t it?

The funny thing is, Nicole began working on Somewhere Else Mother around the same time as Lecia Grossman founded zAmya, but neither of them knew the other. Call it a fantastic moment of kismet, coincidence, fluke, fate. Call it anything you like – and come see it at the downtown library.
